Three former Foundation recipients who currently are investigators from the University of Utah's Department of Physical Therapy have recently received research support from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Julie Fritz, PT, PhD, ATC, recipient of a 2002 Foundation research grant, was awarded a 2-year R21 grant from the NIH's National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) in May 2008. The award of $405,200 is in support of her project titled "Biomechanical and Neurophysiological Effects of Spinal Manipulative Therapy."

Fritz is Assistant Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Utah.

Lee Dibble, PT, PhD, ATC, recipient of the 2004 Foundation geriatric research grant, was awarded a 3-year R15 grant in August 2007 from NIH's National Institute of Child Health and Human Development and the National Center for Medical Rehabilitation Research. The $250,000 award is in support of his study, "Resistance Training and Dopamine Replacement Effects on Hypokinesia in Parkinson Disease." Two long-time supporters—Nancy White, PT, MS, OSC, and Larry Pan, PT, PhD—were recognized for their contributions to the Foundation during the Foundation's Dinner Dance at PT 2008 in San Antonio last month.

Nancy White received the Charles M Magistro Distinguished Service Award, the Foundation's highest award, for her service as a past Foundation president, Board Trustee, and Chair of the Foundation's first major gifts campaign: "Destination: Research Excellence." Working with a national committee of volunteers, White encouraged participation from all sectors of the profession, raising an estimated $4 million for physical therapy research.

Larry Pan, Program Director of Physical Therapy at Marquette University, received the Spirit of Philanthropy Award not only for his outstanding contribution to the Foundation and its mission, but also for his dedication to the physical therapy profession. For the past 20 years, Pan has served as the national adviser to the student-run Marquette Challenge. The Challenge has built awareness of the Foundation and the importance of physical therapy research while raising more than $1.3 million.
