Mallon, who retired after 14 years as APTA's CEO, was the guest of honor at the "Farewell to Frank" Dinner Dance. He was 1 of 2 recipients of the Spirit of Philanthropy Award, which recognized his many years of support of the profession and leadership at APTA. As an ever-encouraging voice, Mallon was a steadfast proponent of the Association, APTA membership, and physical therapy research.
Lang, a former Foundation trustee and treasurer, also received the Spirit of Philanthropy Award in recognition of his strong support of the physical therapy profession and his enthusiasm for promoting the Foundation's mission of funding physical therapy research. As a trustee, Lang brought to the Foundation his expertise in the insurance industry as owner of Maginnis and Associates, an international administrator of insurance for allied health care professionals and professional associations. He provided insights and guidance to the Foundation and encouraged other corporations to follow his lead.
Vierling received the Charles M Magistro Distinguished Service Award, the Foundation's highest award, for his past service as a Foundation trustee and his leadership in promoting support for physical therapy research by the corporate community. The award, named for Charles M Magistro, PT, FAPTA, recognizes individuals who have provided out-standing service and have shown strong personal commitment to promoting the goals of the Foundation.
Vierling served as a Foundation Trustee from 2003 to 2005 while he was CEO of Empi, a manufacturer of noninvasive medical products for rehabilitation. He introduced the Foundation to corporations with physical therapy–related businesses and helped attract new corporate partners that contributed more than one-third of the funding for the $1.5- million Clinical Research Network, the largest research project funded in Foundation's 28-year history.
The evening included a video of messages to Mallon from well-wishers across the country, sponsored by NuStep; a champagne toast presented by Duane Fast, vice president of the sponsor, The Tri W-G Group; and a spirited auction of Mallon-related items donated by Foundation supporters to benefit the Foundation. The dinner dance was underwritten by Healthcare Providers Service Organization, title sponsor for the seventh consecutive year.

The Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Section was recognized for hosting its popular fundraising dances at the Combined Sections Meetings (CSM) for more than 10 years. The Sports Physical Therapy Section was recognized for its increasingly popular annual dance and silent auction of sports-related memorabilia, also conducted at CSM.
The creative dances conducted by both sections have attracted hundreds of physical therapists from across the country each year, offering live bands and contests that followed themes associated with conference venues. Memorable events included: "An Evening in Music City: Country Meets Disco" in Opryland, Tennessee; "Swing Tampa"; "California Dreamin,' " a beach party and luau in San Diego; and "Our Hearts United" in Boston, with red, white, and blue regalia. Foundation President/Chair Richard Shields thanked all award winners for their tremendous contributions to the Foundation.
