Correction for Ties

To the Editor:

In reading the article "Learning and Understanding the Kruskal-Wallis One-Way Analysis-of-Variance-by-Ranks Test for Differences Among Three or More Independent Groups" by Chan and Walmsley (December 1997), I noticed an error in the calculations for the correction for ties on page 1759. The formula for the correction is correct:

where H = 9.73 from previous calculations appears correct and

This formula is correct according to Daniel.1 The use of the calculation by the authors of the article, however, is incorrect:

The correct calculation should not include "0.995" in the numerator; the correction factor is only in the denominator:
