I would like to thank Dr Hayes for her commentary. Helen Saarinen-Rahiika, the first author of our article, died in 1996 following a courageous battle with cancer. Helen is widely acknowledged as the pioneer of problem-based learning (PBL) in our profession. Her gentle wisdom, educational innovations, and capacity to be a mentor to others touched the personal and professional lives of many patients, students, and educators around the world.

I believe that Ms Saarinen-Rahiika would have joined me in openly acknowledging our preference for an integrated problem-based curriculum. This preference is based on our combined experience over the years as faculty members in all three forms of physical therapist (PT) PBL curricula: completely integrated, transitional, and single-course approach. It is crucial in a review article such as ours that a distinction be drawn between preferences of the authors and bias in the review of the literature....
