Literature, theater, and film are rife with the overused plot line in which princes, rich men, and even popes learn about life by spending time among common folk. The plot line resonates with so many of us because it carries some eternal truths. Often you do need to change places to gain insights that are otherwise not attainable.
Early in my career, I offended a nurse colleague who had little tolerance for geriatric patients who complained about being constipated. She told me that she did not understand why they complained so much. She also told me that she had never experienced the condition herself. She took a dim view of my suggestion that taking medication could bind her up and provide her with entirely new insights....
