"Magic Apples"

This excerpt was created in the absence of an abstract.
When we know that evil lurks around the corner, we can steel ourselves to its ugliness.
The rain and the dark, cloudy sky were my companions when I visited Auschwitz. They set the scene in a manner that made the experience more congruous. The intolerable remained vile and almost beyond comprehension, but the dreariness was almost welcome as I passed through the gates of this monument to inhumanity. Within minutes, however, the clouds split apart, allowing the sun to shine on the crematoria, and in response to these warm rays, birds began to sing with an annoying brightness. Their melodies intruded on the darkness that I needed to feel, the darkness that seemed necessary for such a place.
