Importance of Conventional Units

To the Editor:

We are writing to express some misgivings regarding the article "Effects of Assistive Devices on Cardiorespiratory Demands in Older Adults" published in the December 1996 issue. Although the study was well designed and constructed, the data presented and the conclusions drawn from the data appear to be misleading.

It would be more meaningful to clinicians if the data were presented in conventional units (eg, heart rate in beats per minute) rather than being expressed in efficiency units. We realize that the data are expressed in such units for comparative purposes, but in the reality of a steady-state exercise setting, physiological responses are meant to be constant....
