In the military, they give campaign ribbons to signify a soldier's action in battle. In the research world, we just add lines to the curriculum vitae. I have a number of lines commemorating my attendance at many "campaigns" where physical therapists discussed research priorities and attempted to establish agendas for inquiry. I heard lofty rhetoric; I met brilliant people. But nothing compares with my new research heroine—and I doubt whether she has any campaign ribbons. Her name is Zipporah-Lakshmi Muna Inniss.
My guess is that you have never heard of Zipporah. After all, she's only in the ninth grade. In spite of her age and her obvious lack of a terminal degree, Zipporah submitted a manuscript to our Journal. Her paper entitled "What Depth Does Lotion Penetrate Pig Skin When Ultrasound is Used?" was part of a science fair project....
