Disorders of the cardiopulmonary system are common in adults, especially older adults. Physical therapists participate in the care of patients with cardiopulmonary disorders in both specialty and general practices. Because the primary function of the cardiopulmonary system is to deliver oxygen to active tissues, the system plays an important part in movement. In the presence of disease or abnormality, the cardiopulmonary system often is the limiting factor to performing functional activities. Physical therapists are responsible for providing education on the prevention of cardiopulmonary diseases and for managing patients with both primary and secondary diagnoses involving the cardiopulmonary system.

This special series was designed to provide current information on the prevention and management of patients with selected cardiopulmonary problems. This issue focuses on the cardiovascular system, including an introductory article that reviews how the heart, lungs, and vascular system function to deliver oxygen....
