We would like to thank Mr Riddle for his comments and particularly for the clarity with which he addressed several concepts raised in our article. In addition, we have been asked to elaborate on several issues.
The first issue relates to the method used to calculate the Reliability Change Index (RCI) referred to in an article that is in press.1 The standard error of measurement at the 95% confidence interval of 5 points on the Roland-Morris Questionnaire (RMQ) referred to in previous work1 was based on the standard error of the difference score (ie, RCI').2 It was calculated as 1.96 x
, where 1.96 is the tabled z value representing the 95% confidence interval (two-tailed) and MSE is the mean square error term from a test-retest reliability study. The value of MSE was 3.2, and this value yielded an estimate of 5 RMQ points.
