Don Wortley, the 25th president of the American Physical Therapy Association, died on January 14, 1996. With his passing we lost not just a former president, but an extraordinary man whose life and deeds were guided by a deep faith—a faith that was almost palpable and that was clearly manifest in his presidency. Don had many strong beliefs. Among them was a belief in physical therapy and the people who practice it.
Upon leaving the presidency in 1982, Don Wortley contemplated what to say in his farewell speech. He considered talking about achievements and reflecting on the roadblocks that he had faced. Although he realized that his audience would appreciate a state-of-the-association address, he said, "That's not my style. As a matter of fact, the past doesn't really turn me on....
