To the Editor:
I enjoyed reading Kay Cerny's article "Vastus Medialis Oblique/Vastus Lateratis Muscle Activity Ratios for Selected Exercises in Persons With and Without Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome" (August 1995) investigating the possible specificity of certain types of exercise with or without taping in improving vastus medialis oblique muscle (VMO) activity. I can appreciate the importance of investigating the ratio of muscle activity, especially when muscles are antagonists. The anatomical location and direction of fibers of the VMO, however, differ considerably from the anatomical location and direction of fibers of the vastus lateralis muscle (VL). The fibers of the VMO insert lower on the medial side of the patella, and the most distal fibers are almost horizontal or perpendicular to the long axis of the patella.1,2 The specific orientation of the fibers of the VMO thus create principally a medial pull on the patella....
