To the Editor:
I had mixed feelings after reading Bogle Thorbahn and Newton's article, "Use of the Berg Balance Test to Predict Falls in Elderly Persons"1 in the June 1996 issue. I was heartened to see an analysis designed to evaluate the usefulness of a proposed critical value for a test that I use frequently in my practice. Furthermore, I strongly agree with the authors' conclusion that determination of a patient's risk for falling requires not only examination of his or her abilities but also an assessment of the environment in which this individual will live.
I take exception, however, to the authors' suggestion that the balance scale was designed to identify fallers and nonfallers....
