To the Editor:
Although I typically have used measures of patellofemoral alignment in examining patients with patellofemoral pain, I have often wondered whether these measurements were meaningful. Fitzgerald and McClure's study, "Reliability of Measurements Obtained With Four Tests for Patellofemoral Alignment" (February 1995), confirmed my suspicions. Whereas I agree with the general conclusions reached by the authors, I offer three suggestions for improving the analysis and interpretation of their data.
First, the results reported for the medial/lateral displacement test appear to be underestimates. The distribution of paired judgments presented in Table 3 yields a .22 kappa coefficient and 52% agreement, in contrast to the authors' reported .10 kappa value and 44% agreement.
Second, Landis and Koch's1 guidelines for interpreting strength of agreement associated with kappa statistics were misstated....
