As we develop from childhood, we live in ever-expanding worlds. We are amazed to discover that worlds exist beyond the length of our arms' reach and in places where our eyes cannot see. With this knowledge comes awe and humility, because at some point we come to accept the reality that we are not the center of the universe and that most of what exists will be beyond our ken, beyond our senses, and out of our consciousness. Egos shrink when placed in the context of an infinite universe existing along an endless continuum of time.
When faced with the enormity of time and space, some seek sanctuary by shrinking into their corners of the world where they live amidst parochial concerns and narrow views. They create boundaries within which they feel comfort and security....
