We thank Dr Cornwall for his astute commentary on our article entitled "Effect of Continuous-Wave Ultrasound on Blood Flow in Skeletal Muscle" and welcome the opportunity to respond.
Specifically, we would like to address his concern about the size of the treatment area used in our study. There is a surprisingly broad spectrum of recommended treatment settings, both reported in the literature and in clinical practice. Basically, two factors were involved in our selection. First, according to Prentice1 and Starkey,2 an accepted recommendation is that ultrasound be administered for 1 to 2 minutes for each area 1.5 times the size of the transducer face. Because we used a 20-cm2 transducer (5 cm diameter), a 30-cm2 area could be irradiated every 1 to 2 minutes. Therefore, a 90-cm2 area would be treated for 3 to 6 minutes. Thus, the 5-minute treatment time used in our study is within this recommendation....
