I very much appreciate the invitation to comment on Dr Mossberg and Ms McFarland's article. The topic is timely, and the article makes an important contribution to the growing body of knowledge concerning the health status of patients seen by physical therapists.

Physical therapists have long recognized the need to assess the health of their patients beyond the traditional medical indices of health. More recently, there is recognition that measures of impairment, such as range of movement or muscle strength, are not sufficient for measuring the outcomes important to patients. Physical therapists understand the necessity of identifying practical, patient-related goals and have used progress toward such goals as indicators of success of their interventions....
