This excerpt was created in the absence of an abstract.

We would like to thank Dr Reed for his comments, and we appreciate his pertinent discussion of several important issues in our study. We agree with his concluding statement that the physical therapist must consider whether an observed pain or weakness could be due to a cancer in an undiagnosed patient.

Because physical therapists cannot diagnose cancer nor be certain that an observed pain or weakness is the result of cancer, we should be cautious in our use of ultrasound (US). We previously suggested1 that US be discontinued after 2 to 3 weeks if no significant improvement is noted. In light of this study, we now believe that the therapist should consider stopping US after 2 or 3 treatments if no improvement has been noted.
