To the Editor:

I read with great interest and enthusiasm the article by Sinacore and colleagues entitled "Recovery From a 1-Minute Bout of Fatiguing Exercise: Characteristics, Reliability, and Responsiveness,"1 as well as the invited commentary by Binder-Macleod2 (March 1994). I found the article and commentary stimulating and would like to offer the following comments.

Of particular concern throughout the paper and commentary was the repeated statement of "local muscle fatigue" or "local muscle endurance" while referring to and attempting to correlate local muscle abilities to maximal aerobic capacity (VO2max). The Fick equation reminds us that oxygen consumption (VO2) (whether maximal or submaximal) is the result of heart ratexstroke volumexarteriovenous oxygen difference and is far more comprehensive than local function alone.3...
