We are pleased to have the opportunity to reply to the comments of Mr Tecklin and would like to discuss the following issues.
The spectacular advances in the understanding of the genetic abnormality of cystic fibrosis (CF) and the basic defect in electrolyte transport has not yet translated into major changes in clinical care of these patients, except for the use of deoxyribonuclease. The beneficial effects of exercise in favorably altering prognosis in CF has, however, received increasing attention,1 and our study is relevant as it addresses factors influencing exercise performance.
The purpose of our report was not to outline the physical therapy management of patients with CF but to study the effects of a particular hospital intervention program on the exercise capacity of these patients....
