To the Editor:
This letter is in reference to the article by Palisano et al in the June issue of Physical Therapy (1992;72:432–437) concerning the use of goal attainment scales. I would like to support the conclusions of the authors by way of mentioning a pilot study we published in 1978 (Maloney FP, Mirrett P, Brooks C, Johannes K. The use of the goal attainment scale in the treatment and ongoing evaluation of neurologically handicapped children. Am J Occup Ther. 1978;32:505–510). Although our pilot study was of few children (N=6) and did not use an independent evaluator, our conclusions were essentially the same as those of Palisano and colleagues. Our study was of children with marked neurologic involvement who were seen in a group. We also noted that therapists at first underestimated the levels achieved by the children....
