We are most grateful to Dr Payton, Dr Campbell, and Dr Goldsmith for their instructive commentaries on our article, and we greatly value the additional insights that they have provided on this complex topic.

We would certainly agree with Dr Payton that construct validity is a relevant concern within clinical practice; our intention when speaking of "a social science framework" was not to suggest that such a framework could not embrace clinically oriented research in physical therapy. We also welcome his focus on the issue of predictive validity and its core relationship with clinical measurement tools.

Dr Campbell's discussion of face validity helps to clarify the role of this form of validity. Too often, face validity is insufficiently valued because it seems to have no more than an intuitive basis....
