We support the commentaries of Dr Riolo and Dr Turk. They both emphasize the importance of patient compliance, and they both note that only recently physical therapists have become concerned about patient compliance.
Dr Riolo mentions many strategies that physical therapists can use to motivate patients and to improve patient compliance. Dr Turk also points to the relevance of facilitating compliance by designing realistic treatment plans. He stresses the relevance of detecting the nature and frequency of exercise regimens that are both necessary and sufficient.
Dr Turk argues that compliance is not a dichotomous variable, and he notes that more attention is needed for the definition of and criteria for compliance. He also notes the need for more reliable measurements of patient compliance than the global measurement we used in our study.
