To the Editor:
I was pleased to read the ongoing discussion about our research on bed rest for low back pain1 in the September issue of Physical Therapy.2,3 I would like to comment on some potentially misleading observations in Mr Miller's letter, but also to agree with both sides of the discussion. Miller notes that at the 3-month follow-up, subjects assigned to the 7-day bed rest group had significantly better Sickness Impact Profile scores than did those assigned to the 2-day bed rest group. Although this observation is correct, Mr Miller did not offer the caveat that was included in the article, pointing out that there were no significant differences in physical dimension score and that the entire advantage on this functional scale was attributable to the psychosocial dimension....
