Let us begin by thanking Mr Magistro and Dr Selker for their instructive commentaries on our article. They have not only highlighted a number of shortcomings of this research effort, but have most thoughtfully discussed the relevance of these results to physical therapy practice. Clearly, many of the themes raised in their comments need to be addressed in future research.

One of our primary objectives for writing the article was to expand the availability of the important information emerging from the American Physical Therapy Association's (APTA's) 3-year Survey of Outpatient Physical Therapy Practice. We believe the Board of Directors of the APTA should be commended for having the foresight and resolve to fund the collection of information on contemporary outpatient physical therapy practice and the courage to disseminate widely the results of this research to the physical therapy community....
