To the Editor:
I am writing to comment on the article "Comparison of Integrated Electromyographic Activity and Lumbar Curvature During Standing and During Sitting in Three Chairs," from the November 1989 issue of Physical Therapy. Overall, the study was well done and the article was well written. However, the authors' measure of lumbar lordosis using the flexible ruler may have affected their results. They addressed interrater reliability for using the flexible ruler; however, they did not address the important issue of the validity of measurements taken with the flexible ruler as a noninvasive measure of lumbar lordosis.
Hart and Rose1 reported the flexible ruler as a reliable and valid measure of lumbar lordosis. They found a high correlation between the flexible ruler measure and the radiographic measure (r = .87). However, their validation was based on only six subjects....
