To the Editor:
In "Back Support Mechanisms During Manual Lifting" (Phys Ther. 1989;69:38—45), M Scott Sullivan reported some conclusions of our work that unfortunately were misinterpreted and misquoted. Because his purpose in writing the article was an important one, to recommend lifting methods based on biomechanical research findings, we feel compelled to rectify these errors.
Following is a list of Mr Sullivan's misquotations or misinterpretations of our work:
1. "The TLF [thoracolumbar fascia] provides a major support mechanism for lifting, regardless of the lumbar posture adopted" (page 42)—and Sullivan listed us as a reference. We have never stated this. Our work over the years and that of others has refuted this idea. 1–4
2. "The IAP [intra-abdominal pressure] serves to increase the tension along the TLF, assisting in the antiflexion moment" (page 44). We have never suggested this—and our data have shown the opposite.3,5...
