To the Editor:
I am writing to call your attention to what appears to be false advertising in recent issues of Physical Therapy. The advertisement describing NuwaveTM TENS (Staodynamics, Inc) contains several statements pertaining to clinical effectiveness that are substantively inconsistent with the actual results of the study cited in the advertisement.
The advertisement states, "The positive and negative pulses are separated by a precise interval which has been empirically demonstrated to be most effective for controlling low back pain." Elsewhere in the ad the statement is made, "In controlled clinical studies, the patented waveform used in Nuwave was proven more effective for chronic low back pain." A recent paper by Lampe and Dunn1 is cited in support of these statements.
A careful reading of the cited paper suggests, however, that the above-quoted statements are not true and that the advertisers have significantly misrepresented the work of Lampe and Dunn....
