To the Editor:
I was quite impressed with Dr Rulon Francis's study to ascertain if scoliosis manifests itself later in life than had been previously suspected (Phys Ther 68:1513–1516, 1988). The screening of 3,210 subjects definitely lends credibility to the findings. The results were significant and warrant further clinical trials to conclusively determine if there is a latent development of scoliosis.
One of the strong points of the study was that Dr Francis conducted all of the examinations and eliminated the problem of interrater reliability. As in any profession, there is a wide range of skills, and eliminating this variant was key to the findings.
Although I believe Dr Francis's findings were significant and hopefully will result in more focus being placed on the detection of scoliosis, I was confused by a statement he made in the Discussion section....
