To the Editor:
One option for physical therapists interested in postgraduate studies is anthropology. Anthropology in this country is divided into four fields: physical anthropology, sociocultural anthropology, linguistics, and archeology. An argument can be made that the first three fields have direct application to physical therapy.
Physical anthropologists study humanity as a biological phenomenon. They ask questions about human growth and development, genetic determinants, environmental adaptations, and Homo sapiens evolution. Physical anthropologists investigating bipedalism study biomechanics and kinesiology. Paleopathologists investigate diseases of ancient humans. At a recent meeting, the paleopathologists had a large symposium on arthritis. For people interested in anatomy or neuroanatomy, physical anthropology focuses on the gross structures. Physical therapists may find this approach more to their needs than the microscopic studies currently being conducted in anatomy departments....
