To the Editor:
I feel I must comment on an article by Marsha Lefkof entitled "Trunk Rexion in Healthy Children Aged 3 to 7 Years" (PHYSICAL THERAPY, January 1986). In this study, Mrs. Lefkof attempted to gather normative data on isometric and isotonic trunk flexor musculature capabilities in young children. In reviewing the article, I had several questions concerning the reliability and validity of this study.
First, I question the validity of this study in actually measuring trunk flexor muscle strength alone when the hip flexor muscles also may have played a role in the act of maximal trunk flexion. The article makes no reference to how or why the three testing positions selected were chosen. The author chose to stabilize the feet and ankles during two activities in this study. Several authors1–3 who have studied electromyographic activity of the abdominal area during sit-up variations have found that abdominal activity is maximized and hip flexor activity is minimized when the lower extremities are not stabilized....
