To the Editor:
It was with much dismay that I discovered and read the article entitled "Ultrasound Therapy of Subacromial Bursitis: A Double Blind Trial" (PHYSICAL THERAPY, February 1986). My concerns are threefold: 1) The article has technical flaws, 2) the authors are not physical therapists and therefore do not meet the peer-review requirement of the Journal, and 3) articles of this type are a potential hindrance to our growth as a profession. I will address each of these concerns in turn.
First, I find the following flaws in the article.
Grouping patients with diagnoses of supraspinatus tendinitis, subacromial bursitis, and adhesive capsulitis together and then applying similar treatment programs (ie, passive range of motion; "exercise"; and the independent variable, ultrasound) is not in keeping with current physical-therapist-directed programs, despite the authors' claim of "uniform diagnostic entry criteria."...
