To the Editor:
I would like to comment on the article, by David J. Miller, "Comparison of Electromyographic Activity in the Lumbar Paraspinal Muscles of Subjects with and without Chronic Low Back Pain," which appeared in the September issue of PHYSICAL THERAPY. Although I am satisfied with the goals, procedures, and instrumentation of this study, I believe there is an aspect of EMG normalization that has been overlooked that may influence the conclusions.
Normalizing EMG data is certainly a desirable technique for comparing subject-to-subject muscle activity. The particular criterion for defining the normalization condition or task, however, must be considered carefully. The task must be selected to give approximately equal and consistent results for all subjects.
In Miller's study, the normalization task involved leaning forward from a seated position on a wooden bench....
