To the Editor:
The September 1982 Perspectives section in PHYSICAL THERAPY provided insightful responses to role delineations of the sports physical therapist and the athletic trainer. These authors provided accurate and knowledgeable responses to the thrust of the article. Historically, prospective athletic trainers were recommended to pursue physical therapy schooling to enhance their preparation and employment opportunities. As an educator, I have continued to advise my students of all available opportunities to progress professionally, as I was advised during my undergraduate career.
With the completion of the National Commission for Health Certifying Agencies (NCHCA), the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) will benefit from its own role delineation study to assess minimum education and certification standards. The authors did not present a cut-and-dry situation; it takes long, hard hours to provide medical supervision of all athletics, not just college and professional athletics where a multitude of materials and supplies are available....
