This special communication presents a working model for integrating physical therapy into the neonatal intensive care unit (ICU), based on my experience as a physical therapist in an ICU nursery as it evolved over four years. The knowledge gained and shared in this paper can be applied to other ICU nurseries where physical therapy has not yet been made an integral part of the total treatment approach to newborns needing special care.
DEVELOPMENT OF UNIT
The Southwest Neonatal Unit in Sunrise Hospital, Las Vegas, Nevada, serves any baby in southern Nevada and bordering areas of Utah, Arizona, and California. The request for a physical therapist in the Southwest Neonatal Unit arose from the need for continued care of infants with identified motor problems. The neonatal unit social worker requested physical therapy evaluation of the identified babies in the nursery and follow-up parent-infant education after discharge....
